Empty Mugs Fund Raising Project: The Celtic Faire, Finnegan's, and Empty Bowls Aberdeen teamed up working together to stamp out hunger with a new event at the 2015 Celtic Faire -- "NESD's Empty Mugs Program.” At the 2016 Faire, people who participated in this event gave a $20.00 donation, grabbed an original handmade stoneware mug with a cool Finnegan's beer (or soda) and got to keep the one-of-a-kind collectible mug! PROCEEDS BENEFITED LOCAL FOOD BANKS! “Over $2,000 was raised in 2016 and another $2,300 in 2015 at these events.” NESD Celtic Faire & Games will continue this community support project again in 2017.

Soda Bread Contest Rules

Saturday Morning
September 16, 2017
Eligibility: There are no age restrictions. Judges may not enter. Contest Committee members involved in any part of the registration, judging or voting process are not eligible.
Entry Deadline: Entries must be dropped off at the designated table at the festival gate between 8:30 am and 9:30 am on Saturday, September 16, 2017. No pre-registration is necessary.
Entry Form and Fee:  There is an $8 registration fee which entitles the contestant to enter the soda bread and/or scone competition. 
Each contestant may submit only one entry in each category.  Payment of the Registration fee also gives access to the festival for one day for the entrant.  Contestants do not need to be present to win.

 

Registration Process:
To enter the soda bread competition, bring one loaf made from your recipe of choice. Contestants will complete an entry form and place their loaf in a plain paper bag provided by the Festival. The bag will be marked by Festival staff with the Entry Number. A committee member will deliver numbered loaves to the judging area.
Judging:
Juried Judging will take place privately beginning approximately 10:00 am on Saturday, September 16, 2017.
No contestants will be allowed in the Juried Judging Area.
Winner Announcements:
Winners do not need to be present to win. All winners will be announced in the afternoon on the day of the competition. Winners will also be notified by phone or mail (if not present). Winners will be announced to local media (though we have no control over publication).
Prizes:
Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners.

 

  • Traditionally, Irish Soda Bread was made using four basic ingredients of flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk, then baked as a round loaf with an "X" cut in the top.
  • Many other ingredients may be added for flavor. Some examples are sugar, caraway seeds, pumpkin seeds, eggs, butter, raisins, currants, dried fruit, oatmeal, even bacon! However do not "glorify" the bread so much that is becomes a cake. Cake is made from a batter while bread is from a dough. The judges should be able to recognize your entry as a loaf of bread and not a cake.
  • Because this is a soda bread contest, no yeast-risen breads are allowed.

 

The organizing committee is not responsible for any loss or damage to persons or equipment that might occur during the competitions.

Irish Stew Competition

Friday Evening
September 15, 2017
Centennial Village
Brown Co. Fairgrounds
Entries accepted starting 5:30pm

Bring prepared Irish stew in a minimum 4 quart crock-pot, hot and ready to serve. The competition is open to professional and non-professional cooks. Entries should be brought to Centennial Village entrance between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017. Entry fee is $10 and covers the cook’s gate fee (1 person) for Friday evening festivities. The recipe and cooking instructions must be submitted with your entry.
After judging, remaining stew will be served to the public for a donation. Please bring 1 ladle for serving. The Celtic Faire will provide cups and spoons.
Judging will be based on flavor, smell, texture, and appearance of the stews. The judge’s decision is final.
Make your favorite family Irish stew recipe. Most Irish stews have lamb, potatoes, onions, carrots, and other root vegetables, etc. Stews may be made using beef and include Guinness or stout.
Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place winners.

Prizes are $50 to 1st place and $25 to 2nd place.

The organizing committee is not responsible for any loss or damage to persons or equipment that might occur during the competitions.

                The organizing committee shall have the right to use photographs of dishes and competitors on social media, print, and websites.

2017 Scones Baking Competition Rules and Information

Saturday Morning

September 16, 2017

 

To enter the scone competition, bring 6 freshly-baked scones made from your recipe of choice.  Entries must be dropped off at the designated table at the festival entry between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017.

For one entry fee of $8, a contestant may submit an entry to the Scone competition as well as entering the Soda Bread competition.  Payment of the Registration fee also gives access to the festival for one day for the entrant. 

The shape of the scones can be round cutouts, or triangles, or drop.  Judges will be checking scones for taste, texture, and freshness.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners.  Contestants do not need to be present to win.  Winners will be announced Saturday afternoon.

 

A modern scone is a single-serving quick bread, usually made of wheat, barley, or oatmeal with baking powder as a leavening agent and baked on sheet pans. It does not contain yeast. Scones may be sweet or savoury. They frequently include raisins, currants, cheese, dates, blueberries, raspberries, flavorings such as cinnamon, or onion or bacon.
